A hydrous magnesium silicate that belongs to the sepiolita-paligorskita family.

It has a structure formed by parallel chains that create some channels.

Sepiolite has different types of water in its structure that are lost due to the heating action. This loss of water is reversible until 400 - 500º and from that temperature the coordination water is lost, producing changes in the structure.

There are three active centres of absorption: oxygen atoms from the tetrahedric leafs, water molecules coordinated with magnesium and sylanol groups. Then, chemisorpsion phenomena take place while in the absorption intervenes essentially the porosity of the structure.

The sylanol groups have a certain acidity and they can be catalytic or reaction centres.

Sepiolite can act as a polymer semifortifier.
